  • The Something and the Nothing

    This month's poetry homework (mine) was to write a children's poem. I projected it on the Smartboard and had my students watch me write it as a writing exercise. It is a "thinking aloud" strategy. They voted for or against inclusion of certain lines.

    The Something and the Nothing

    The something and the nothing
    went out to take a walk;
    when Something said to Nothing,
    “I think we need to talk.”

    But Nothing just kept walking,
    he never said a word;
    getting something out of Nothing
    is really quite absurd.

    Tonight's poetry group was cancelled due to tornado warnings, so I'll share it with you instead.

  • Sounds like a fun process!  And what a great result!  Loved it.

  • Very clever. Wow, tornado warnings! Be safe.<3

  • Nice! We've been working on writing MORE. Our standardized test looks for third graders to write five paragraphs and they are used to writing one. It's like pulling teeth, but I'm making them do it. Not as much fun as your lesson, I can tell you!

  • ha! i love it! i'd be intersted to know some of the lines they vetoed. instat feedback is a precious thing - but maybe also frustrating too?

  • (not that i catch anything frustrated in this piece, it seems seemlessly crafted)

  • Interesting because "something" and "nothing" are the subjects instead of to be object .
    Love
